Lost in the Wilderness? Discover the God Who IS Always Present

Ever feel overwhelmed, forgotten, or simply not enough? Dive into the incredible story of Moses and discover the God who declares, 'I AM.'

God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

Exodus 3:14

Have you ever found yourself in your own kind of wilderness? Not necessarily a sprawling desert of sand and stone, but perhaps a season of life where everything feels uncertain, barren, and frankly, overwhelming. Maybe it’s a career path that’s hit a dead end, a relationship that’s crumbling, or a personal struggle that leaves you feeling utterly inadequate. In those moments, it's easy to wonder if God is even there, let alone actively involved in the messy details of your life.

An Ordinary Shepherd, An Extraordinary Call

Imagine Moses, a man who knew a thing or two about wildernesses. For forty years, he'd been tending sheep in the vast, desolate landscape of Midian – a fugitive from Egypt, a murderer, and now, a simple shepherd. His grand royal past was long gone, his future seemingly defined by dusty trails and bleating flocks. He was, by all accounts, an ordinary man in an ordinary season, perhaps feeling forgotten and far from any divine purpose.

Then, in a moment that defied all logic, he saw it: a bush ablaze with fire, yet remarkably, it wasn't consumed. Curiosity, a very human trait, drew him closer. And that's when the ordinary became extraordinary. From within the flames, a voice called his name, a voice that belonged to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. This wasn't a distant, abstract deity; this was the God of his ancestors, stepping directly into Moses' mundane existence.

God had a monumental task for Moses: to lead an entire nation out of generations of brutal slavery. Moses, understandably, was terrified and full of excuses. “Who am I?” he stammered, “that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” (Exodus 3:11). He felt too small, too unqualified, too broken.

"I AM WHO I AM": More Than Just a Name

And then came the game-changing question, a question every leader, every follower, every human has asked God in their own way: “What is your name?” What should I tell them when they ask who sent me?

God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

— Exodus 3:14

This wasn't just a label for God; it was a profound theological declaration. In a world full of gods tied to specific places, powers, or origins, "I AM WHO I AM" declared God's absolute uniqueness:

  • Self-Existent: He doesn't *become*; He simply *is*. He has no beginning, no end, no need for anything outside of Himself.

  • Eternal and Unchanging: He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. His character, His promises, and His power are constant.

  • Always Present: "I AM" means He is actively here, now, in every situation.

  • Absolutely Sovereign: He is the ultimate reality, the source of all being, who acts decisively to fulfill His purposes.

For the enslaved Israelites, groaning under a pharaoh who didn't even know Joseph, this revelation was everything. It wasn't just a distant memory of Abraham's God; it was the active, present God, the ultimate power in the universe, stepping onto the world stage to set them free. It was the assurance that their deliverer was sent by the supreme, unchanging, all-powerful "I AM."

The "I AM" for Our "I Am Not Enough" Moments

Moses felt inadequate. He had a stutter. He was a shepherd, not a diplomat. But God didn't call him for his abilities; God called him because "I AM" would be with him. This is the promise that undergirds all of God's work, both then and now.

When you look at your own burning bush moments – those challenging situations that demand more than you feel you have – remember this:

  • When you say, "I am afraid," God says, "I AM your courage."

  • When you say, "I am lost," God says, "I AM your way."

  • When you say, "I am not enough," God says, "I AM your sufficiency."

  • When you feel forgotten, remember that the "I AM" is intensely present and intimately involved in your life.

This same "I AM" also walked among us in the person of Jesus. When challenged, Jesus declared,

"Before Abraham was, I AM" (John 8:58).
He wasn't just claiming to be old; He was claiming to be God, the eternal, self-existent "I AM." Jesus is the active, life-giving presence of God, who came to set us free, just as He set the Israelites free.

Finding Your Burning Bush Today

God is not distant; He is intimately involved, powerful, and perpetually seeking to bring fullness of life to all who respond to His call. Today, take five minutes to intentionally notice one "burning bush" moment in your daily routine. It won't be a literal flaming shrub, but it could be:

  • The unexpected kindness of a stranger that brightens your day.

  • The breathtaking beauty of a sunrise or a flower pushing through concrete.

  • A quiet moment of peace amidst chaos that brings unexplainable calm.

  • A Scripture verse that suddenly leaps off the page and speaks directly to your heart.

Acknowledge God's "I AM" in that small, everyday miracle. Whisper His name. Thank Him for being actively present, even when you feel most alone or inadequate. For the God who is, who always has been, and who will always be, is with you, guiding you through your wilderness and into His promised land.
